In a strategic move to empower readers with the ability to select books tailored to their reading abilities for Smart Reading, Director Hsiang-Ping Ma of the National Library of Public Information (NLPI) and Executive Vice President Yao-Ting Sung of National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) formalized their collaboration through the signing of a memorandum on January 3, 2024. The primary objective of this partnership is to jointly establish an intelligent reading learning environment by introducing the Book Smart Reading Age Indicator service (SR value), offering a sophisticated and personalized reading experience for readers of all ages nationwide.

During the visit of Executive Vice President Yao-Ting Sung and the Chinese Language and Technology Center team from NTNU to NLPI, discussions on service applications and technical research paved the way for the integration of NTNU's independently developed text readability model. This integration will be incorporated into NLPI's "Educational Teacher and Student E-book Service," "e-Book Online Service," and "NLPI Library Catalog," introducing the Book Smart Reading Age Indicator service (SR value) to assess the difficulty levels of library books.

Director Hsiang-Ping Ma of NLPI mentioned that in the past, readers relied on book introduction information, making it challenging to assess the content's difficulty selecting books was a time-consuming process. The collaboration between NLPI and NTNU now streamlines this process, allowing readers to choose books based on their reading ability values. In the future, within NLPI's collection system, teachers, parents, or students can select books based on age-reference SR values and a corresponding grade-level table. The system can also generate age-appropriate book recommendation lists, aiming to provide suitable books for age-appropriate reading, precise book selection, and enhance reading efficiency, motivation, and learning interest for school-age readers.
