To celebrate 2025 World Book Day, the National Library of Public Information (NLPI) is launching a groundbreaking event titled“Readventure: Orienteering into Picture Books”, running from April 1 to 30. For the first time, the library incorporates orienteering—an outdoor navigation sport—into an indoor library setting. This immersive reading adventure invites visitors to explore NLPI’s extensive picture book collections, including Children’s Picture Books, Global Picture Books, Senior Age Picture Books, and Picture Book Databases. The experience is further enhanced by AI librarian and interactive installations, turning the library into a dynamic exploration zone.
On April 19, a Picture Book Carnival featuring children's theater and author talks will serve as the event’s grand highlight. This orienteering-style reading adventure is a must for all readers seeking a unique and engaging way to connect with books.
NLPI is the first to bring outdoor orienteering into a library setting, creatively pairing it with its rich picture book resources to design a customizedReadventure Game. To help participants get started, the library will host “Orienteering Experience Workshops” on April 5, 12, and 19. These beginner-friendly sessions, tailored for families, seniors, and newcomers, use simple grid-based gameplay to introduce basic orienteering concepts and techniques.
During April, visitors who borrow five physical picture books at the first-floor circulation desk will receive a special game map to join theReadventure Game (Trial Version). With the map in hand, participants can freely navigate the picture book area and themed spaces, completing tasks and checking in at interactive points. Successful explorers will not only receive a reward but also have a chance to win grand prizes, including flight tickets! This map-guided journey transforms reading into a fun and adventurous experience.
The highlight on April 19 will feature a live performance of “Crisis in Picture Book Village” by the Gift Box Children's Theater, offering an engaging, interactive storytelling experience for all ages. ThePicture Book Village Carnival will include booths from publishers, picture book libraries, Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters, the Cycling Culture Museum, and more. The event will offer popular DIY workshops and scheduled storytelling sessions to promote both reading and environmental education.
That same afternoon, the library will also host its first-ever Readventure Orienteering Challenge, with individual and family categories open for free registration. This event turns reading into an active, full-body adventure.
Adding to the excitement, acclaimed picture book authors—including Golden Tripod Award winner Liu, Hsu-Kung(劉旭恭), Bologna Illustrator Exhibition winner Chen, You-Ling(陳又凌), “Post-Youth Picture Book House” editor-in-chief Lu, Yi-Fang(盧怡方), and reading advocate Chu, Jing-Rong(朱靜容)—will share their insights through a series of engaging lectures.
“Readventure: Orienteering into Picture Books” puts reading at the heart of exploration, inviting the public to discover the joy of picture books through playful adventure. NLPI warmly invites everyone to step into the library this April, follow the map, and embark on a personal journey through stories and imagination.
