The National Library of Public Information (NLPI) and the German Cultural Center – Goethe Institut Taipei are collaborating for the first time to present the exhibition " So leben sie noch heute. Europa illustriert die Grimms" (This is how they still live today) organized by the International Youth Library (Internationale Jugendbibliothek) in Germany. This exhibition will be on display from February 18th (Tuesday) to July 27th (Sunday) at the World Picture Book Center. It brings together representative illustrations from Grimm's Fairy Tales from 13 European countries, extending the infinite imagination of picture books through the diverse perspectives of visual aesthetics and original literature.
The stories of Grimm's Fairy Tales originate from German folklore and fairy tales dating back to the Middle Ages, recorded in their purest form. They are the most translated German works in the world, timeless and a collective memory across generations. These stories, with their rich imagination, beautiful dreams, kind hearts, and noble values, have opened children's hearts and become treasures of world children's literature. The illustrations in this exhibition retain the original story elements of Grimm's Fairy Tales while developing different narrative directions, incorporating contemporary new trends: Little Red Riding Hood gets lost in the urban jungle, the Town Musicians of Bremen become radical labor leaders, Hansel and Gretel become bounty hunters specializing in eliminating witches. These interpretations highlight the unique characteristics of European illustrators as they reinterpret, annotate, or update Grimm's Fairy Tales in their minds.
Additionally, to give readers a full understanding of the stories behind the exhibited illustrations, original picture books from various European countries will be on display. Whether you want to revisit familiar childhood memories, discover the evolution of ancient Grimm's Fairy Tales in modern times, or are curious about other fantastic picture books at the World Picture Book Center, we welcome you to explore the third floor of the NLPI World Picture Book Center. We hope that through the " So leben sie noch heute. Europa illustriert die Grimms" (This is how they still live today) international touring exhibition, to explore the human landscapes of different cultural systems and uncover surprising perspectives and inspirations.
