More Than One Way to Win: From the Olympics to Life-Changing Reads
Hits:207
《Introduction
Have you ever wondered why some people can rise again after falling seven times? Is it talent, luck, or a kind of “grit” that can be learned?
This lecture is presented by Tseng Chuan-yu, a two-time Olympic volunteer and special correspondent for the Paris 2024 Olympics for CommonWealth Parenting. Drawing from firsthand observations at the Games, she brings audiences into the real-life stories of Taiwanese athletes, including Olympic boxing gold medalist Lin Yu-ting, gymnast Tang Chia-hung, weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun, and table tennis legend Chuang Chih-yuan. Through their journeys, the lecture invites us to rethink the meaning of “success”: Can prejudice block our dreams? Is failing to defeat a champion still a form of success? Can passing on experience off the field also be considered a victory?
Integrating psychologist Angela Duckworth’s concept of “grit,” the lecture introduces four key elements—cultivating interest, deliberate practice, a clear sense of purpose, and sustaining hope. Combined with the lived experiences of Taiwanese athletes, these insights offer practical ways for participants to develop resilience in their own lives.
In addition, the session will feature sports-themed picture books and readings, such as Salt in His Shoes, The Frog Prince, The Little Mermaid Who Protects the Ocean, and The Queen Who Wanted to Swim. Through reading, participants can connect with the spirit and vitality of athletes. This lecture is ideal for anyone interested in personal growth, the human side of sports, and parent–child reading.
