《Introduction》The Formosan black bear is Taiwan’s only native bear species and was once voted by the public as the most representative animal of Taiwan. Yet, despite this recognition, true understanding of the species remains limited and is often clouded by misconceptions. What, then, is the appeal of such a rare apex predator? What draws researchers to spend decades alone in the vast mountain forests, tracking the elusive traces of bears that are so rarely seen?
Over the past thirty years, public awareness of the Formosan black bear has grown—from relative obscurity to widespread recognition. At the same time, its population status has shifted from being scarcely detected across the island to more frequent sightings in certain regions, including cases reported by the public involving injured bears or human–bear conflicts. In light of these changes, the future direction of conservation and management has become an issue that calls for our continued collective effort.
