Taiwan’s public library initiatives in science popularization are gaining increasing international recognition. Ms. Hsiang-Ping Ma, Director-General of the National Library of Public Information (NLPI), has been invited by the Science and Technology Libraries Section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) to deliver an online presentation on March 30, 2026 (Monday) at 3:00 PM (Taiwan Time).
The presentation, titled “Science Popularization at the National Library of Public Information, Taiwan: Reading × Science × Civic Literacy,” will introduce NLPI’s strategies and achievements in promoting science reading, highlighting the innovative role of public libraries in connecting science with society.
In response to rapid technological advancement and the growing demand for STEM education and civic literacy, NLPI has developed an institutionalized “Science Reading Platform” centered on “Reading × Science × Civic Literacy.” Through the integration of exhibitions, lectures, hands-on activities, and curated reading resources, NLPI has actively promoted public engagement with science. Since 2016, NLPI has collaborated with the National Institutes of Applied Research (NIAR) to introduce cutting-edge technologies and forward-looking topics such as artificial intelligence (AI), supercomputing, disaster prevention, and energy into library services. By linking these initiatives with library collections and digital resources, NLPI has created a continuous learning pathway from “exhibition experience” to “in-depth reading,” enabling scientific knowledge to be integrated into everyday reading and daily life.
The webinar will be conducted in Mandarin. Participants interested in science education and public library services are warmly welcome to attend.
